Tasting Notes for Bunnahabhain Staoisha 7 Year Old Single Malt - Artist Collective 2013

Nose:  Rich and concentrated with a medicinal blast of peat before lemon and coconut take over. Strong spices rub shoulders with white flowers all layered on a background of malted barley.

Taste:  Peaty, smoky, ashy, medicinal, salty, and beautiful. Once this terpene storm has passed, orchard and citrus fruits along with fresh nuts rise to the surface.

Finish: Long and satisfying. Surprisingly concentrated with a blast of peat leading us to iodized air from the shoreline of Islay. Scents of seaweed and field flowers perfume the atmosphere and conjur the image of the rocky shoreline.

  • This heavily-peated Bunnahabhain single malt was released in 2021 as part of La Maison du Whisky’s Artist Collective series. It was distilled in 2013 and aged in a Dechar/Rechar hogshead for 7 years, before being bottled at a hefty 64.1%. Dechar/Rechar is a process to rejuvenate a cask. First, a layer of char is scraped off and then the cask is recharred. This way a new layer of wood is exposed to the spirit. Bunnahabhain 7 Years Old Artist Collective 2013 is a deep and complex single malt with rich notes of flowers, fruits, honey and mint. The label features the artwork ‘Glass’ by Mara Surleau, evoking the tumultuous waters of Islay. This release comes without a box.

Built in 1881 in an otherwise desolate area of Islay, the small village of Bunnahabhain (pronounced boon-a-hav-en) grew up to serve the new distillery. This happened pretty much instantly for the immediate area, with housing, new roads and even a pier being built along with the distillery to accommodate the business needs. Unlike the other Islay distilleries, Bunnahabhain's classic spirit is very lightly peated more, akin to a rich, Highland malt. Fresh aromatic notes float over the little bit of smoke, with a malty sweetness and a fruit and nut quality. Bunnahabhain Staoisha is their heavily peated whisky which harks back to the style which the distillery initially produced.

  • Since the dawn of time, artist collectives have been places of exchange, inspiration and creativity. In the same way, each of the single malts found in the La Maison Du Whisky Artist Collective range draws the richness of their 70 years of expertise in selecting the very best casks for small batch creations. Devoted to diversity, every region and every style of Scottish single malt, peated and unpeated, are represented.

The marquee release from LMDW Creations, this line is lovingly created with casks hand-picked in limited release for the discerning. Each release features a contemporary artist, drawing on their own personal experiences echoing the essences of the spirits. They have been bottled especially in the hopes that these expressions will delight, amuse, and inspire. We can attest that they certainly do that and this is one of our favourite ranges.
