Tasting Notes for Benromach Aged 15 Years

Nose: Aromas of sweet toffee leading to notes of cracked black pepper and peat smoke. Rich forest fruits develop with dark chocolate and dried banana.

Palate: Creamy and sweet with ripe apples and an undertone of charred oak. Dark chocolate develops and leads to toasted malt and orange peel with a subtle hint of smoke.

Finish: Medium creamy finish with soft smoke and dried fruit.

  • The signature 15 Year Old Single Malt from Benromach Distillery was added to the core range line-up in 2015, and similarly to the 10 year old, is matured for the first nine years in 4/5 bourbon and 1/5 sherry casks, before transferring to sherry casks for another year. The difference here is that the whisky is left in the sherry casks for an additional 5 years, which combined with Benromach’s policy of only ever using first fill oak casks, results in an intense but balanced flavour profile. There's big spices (think ginger, mint and a little sprinkle of cinnamon), there's juicy fruit (plum and clementine), there's a touch of smoky charred oak - all well placed and in harmony with each other.

When Benromach Distillery was bought by Gordon & MacPhail back in 1993, their goal was to create a traditional, handcrafted single malt based on the character of Speyside whiskies from yesteryear. Recalling the Speyside tradition of topping up fires with cuts of peat when coal ran low, Scottish barley is grown locally and malted with a little peat smoke to Benromach’s exact specifications. Everything at the distillery is done by hand, including hand filling casks which are individually weighed, stencilled by hand and stowed in our traditional dunnage warehouses. With total control over the entire process, a handful of distillers relying entirely on their expertise and senses to make the finest handmade whisky is a guarantee of genuine character. The smallest working distillery in Speyside with current output of just 200,000 litres per year, Benromach whiskies are well worth checking out when you can find them.

  • Duncan MacCallum and F.W. Brickmann founded the Benromach Distillery Company in 1898. Duncan MacCallum had previously been working at the Glen Nevis Distillery in Campbeltown and FW Brickmann was a spirit broker in Leith, Edinburgh. Construction work started at the site of Benromach Distillery in 1898 however due to the depression in the Scotch Whisky industry in 1898 the distillery did not start producing whisky until 1900 but closed the same year due to a lack of money.

In 1911 Benromach was acquired by the London based Harvey McNair & Co who continued distilling until the onset of the First World War. After the war Benromach was acquired by Benromach Distillery Ltd and was run by this new private company until 1925. In 1938 Benromach was acquired by Associated Scottish Distilleries Ltd which later became a part of Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. Between 1966 and 1974 the distillery was modernised and continued to run until 1983 when the distillery was officially closed.

In 1993 Gordon and MacPhail took over the site and in 1997 they started to restore the distillery to a working order. The design of the distillery was changed slightly to allow it to be operated by one man. Finally in 1998 the distillery was officially reopened by Charles, Prince of Wales and bottling of the new malt started in 2004. Today Benromach the smallest working distillery in Speyside, employing just two people to make its whisky - current output is just 200,000 litres per year.
