Bumbu : XO is the second release from the folks that bring us Bumbu rum, and it takes the quality up a notch. Whereas Bumbu : The Original is a spiced rum coming in at 35% and primarily designed for mixing, Bumbu : XO is a real rum which is bottled at 40% abv and is designed for sipping as much as mixing. This special release is distilled and aged in Panama, at the Don Jose Distillery, and is aged up to 18 years in bourbon barrels and finished in Spanish white oak sherry casks.
The bottle for Bumbu : XO deserves a mention. A fragrance-quality glass bottle with an iconic tarnished metal “X” medallion, metallic painted details, and an oversized, old-fashioned cork. We’re not sure why, but it really does seem that the best bottles are reserved for rum. This bottle is our number 2 favourite (R.L Seales 10 Year Old being our number 1 favourite) and really does look the part! -
Bumbu rum is distilled at the Don Jose Distillery in Panama, better known as the Distilleria Don Jose. The company was started in 1908 when Don José Varela established the first sugar mill in the town of Pesé, in the recently-formed Republic of Panama. Nearly 3 decades later, his 3 sons persuaded him to open a distillery and production started in 1936. The distillery cultures their own yeast in the lab at the distillery and is most famous for the Ron Abuelo brand of rums (which we love!).
