Tasting Notes for W.L. Weller Special Reserve

Nose: Soft, cereal-forward bourbon. A ghost of cherry, a twist of black pepper, and a blanket of sweet corn kernels.

Taste: Delightful with well balanced sweet/semi-spicy, caramel apple, vanilla, and shelled nuts.

Finish: A little long, crisp and continues with shelled nuts and honey

  • When it comes to wheated bourbons, this is the one that started them all... Well, William Larue Weller (the bourbon's namesake) is the one that started it. When you talk Pappy, Maker's Mark or Rebel Yell you have to thank Mr. Weller for having the foresight to swap out the rye for wheat. Special Reserve is the 'entry' bottling to the Weller line and a must have for anyone wanting to learn more about bourbon and its different variations.

  • Weller. W.L. Weller was born in Kentucky in 1825. His claim to fame was the wheated bourbon produced by his wholesale whiskey business, which was prized for its smoothness. Weller today is generally known as “The Original Wheated Bourbon”, a style which includes other famour bourbons such as Makers Mark, Larceny and Pappy Van Winkle. In 1935, Weller’s business was combined with the Stitzel distillery, owned by former Weller salesman and afrementioned Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle. The Stitzel-Weller distillery was later sold and closed in 1972; today it is the visitor’s center for Bulleit Bourbon. Sazerac purchased the Weller brand in 1999, and it has since been produced at the award winning Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky.
